Summer Reading List

Summer Books

Summer is upon us! Which means for most, leisurely weekends relaxing and reading in the sun, afternoon naps (with a bit of reading) or if you are lucky enough going somewhere warmer than the UK and reading by the pool or on the beach!

So as I have quite a few new books that are in the charts at the moment and some other reads, I thought I would start my own little book club of sorts (can't really call it a book club can I? I am the only member! But if you want to read along with me I would love that... I will give more info in my first book review). With the idea of reading a book every week and writing a review on it.. though it may take longer with some books depending on how busy I am and how much I love/don't love it!

As you can maybe see by the spine I have started reading 50 Shades of Grey (Amazon - £3.20). Mainly because it is the 'book of the moment' and I wanted to see if I loved or hated it as all the reviews have been so varied. First reactions are it is very repetitive and you can tell it is E.L.James' first novel but I am getting through it quite quickly...  so I shall reserve judgement for now.

If you are a book worm I would love to know what you are reading at the moment or what the last book you read was!

  1. I've read a few of those - Room, 50 shades, Before I go to Sleep & the Sophie kinsella. All thoroughly enjoyable books, I love a good Kinsella book, Room was so emotional and BIGTS definitely kept me awake at night from wanting to know what was going on. And 50 shades is fantastically trashy! Reading Only the Innocent now which so far is good!

  2. I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood at the moment but the last book I really enjoyed was A Girl Like You by Gemma Burgess. I have a weak spot for "chick lit". I couldn't get into 50 shades at all, look forward to reading about how you got on with it :)!

    1. Yes I also love my chick lit especially in summer and definitely on holiday. I have nearly finished 50 Shades of Grey and think it may be a lengthy review as I have a lot to say about it and not all good really. But I think it's a book you either love or hate. Going to look up A Girl Like you and have a read at the synopsis :)

    1. Oh I love Sophie Kinsella books and have read them all but this one and maybe one other I think - I loved The Undomestic Goddess the most, it actually had me laughing out loud in parts and the Shopoholic series is great :)

      Thanks for your comment x

  5. I'm about to start reading Monsieur Monde Vanishes by Georges Simenon but you've given me already so many options on what to read next. My local library has a copy of Too close to home so I think I'll have a read of that next. Years ago I also read a couple from the Kovac/Liska series by Tami Hoag. They were pretty good too. :)

  6. Lindwood Barcley is an awesome author. Although all his books are similar, you can't help but get absorbed in them and want to carry on reading them to find out what happens. I tend to get through his books in like 1or2 days. Hope you like it! X

  7. I read Room a few months ago and absolutely loved it! It's so emotional and you just want to keep reading. I hope you enjoy it :) If you haven't read The Help you definitely should, it's a lovely book, and the film is great too :)

  8. My A level English teacher told us that 50 Shades of Grey was a fantastic book but then panicked and told us that it wasn't suitable until we were 30! Ever since I have been really curious...lol

Enjoy your summer reading, I have piles of books stacking up for the summer too, I blame amazon and the cheap prices!

    1. Oh I am bit surprised at your teacher as I wouldn't say the book is wrote that well at all.. but I have to say I warmed to it even though I tried to resist liking it! I think you should add it to your summer reading list ;) and yes I blame amazon too! hah

  9. I read Dear John and loved it! But I found that I really disliked The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas I think compared to the movie the book is pretty poor, i'm going to read Before I Go To Sleep this Summer too.
I just finished reading A Game of Thrones which was fantastic and i'm going to start A Story of A Beautiful Girl which is set in the 60s and its about discrimination towards disabled people, kinda of like The Help which I also loved but this time the discrimination is aimed at disabled people.

    1. Thank you for your comment :) I love reading about what people have read and what they thought about it. I'm looking forward to reading Dear John as I loved the movie and yes I think I know what you mean about The Boy in the Striped Pjyamas.. I have read parts of it and as it's wrote through the boys eyes it is quite a simple/basic book.

You have me curious about A Game of Thrones now as I tried watching the first episode and it was too gorey for me so I wonder if I could like the book, as the storyline sounds great. Definitely think I will be looking up A Story of A Beautiful Girl as I like reads like that.

    1. I am nearly finished with 50 shades of Grey and even though I disliked quite a few things with it I have a feeling I will be reading 50 shades darker. I'm looking forward to reading Me Before You as it has some great reviews on Amazon and it seems a bit of a different storyline.

  11. Room, Before I Go To Sleep and Too Close To Home are all really good, as are Linwood Barclay's other books. I'm going to check out the others as we obviously have similar taste! Would love to hear which other books you'd recommend as I seem to read books quicker than I can find new ones!

    1. Yes I love Lindwood Barclay as well :) read three other books by him and enjoyed them all so much. Sadly I can't really recommend any new books as I have only got back in to the habit of reading! But think I will be doing book posts quite a bit with wishlists etc

  12. I'm currently reading the third hunger games book and I have to say I have loved the series. I was disappointed by the film which is why I actually read the first book to compare. Needless to say the books are way better than the film so far and I'm not sure how they'll do the second film as they left quite a bit out or changed bits from the first one. Fifty shades of grey is on my reading list for this summer too :) x

    1. I was tempted to do the same as you after watching The Hunger Games as I left feeling a bit disapointed but I have so many new books I don't think I can start a trilogy but I'm thinking it may be one to start reading on my holiday later on in the year.

  13. I love reading on holiday! You've inspired me to get Dear John for this year :)
One of my favourite authors for holiday books is Erica James, Tell it to the Skies is amazing!
I agree with psychowolf above that The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is disappointing. I haven't seen the film but I didn't think it was a very captivating read :/

  24. I read the '50 Shades' trilogy back in May... I loved the story & the evolution of their relationship but the writing!! Very repetitive, I mean how many times can you read 'inner goddess'. lol. I loved 'Before I Go to Sleep' & am now reading 'Room' after seeing it here... intrigued after reading all the comments :)) xXx
